Becoming Involved with StEMS

To be eligible to apply to join the StEMS team, you must currently be EMT-1 certified in Santa Clara County (requires the completion of the National Registry written and practical exam), and you must have a current CPR for the professional rescuer certification (either American Heart Association, or American Red Cross).

If you are EMT-1 certified in any county in the state of California, Santa Clara County will accept your EMT license. If you are EMT certified in another state, some additional testing may be required for Santa Clara certification, but you don.t typically have to repeat the basic training.

We are happy to answer questions and assist you throughout this process. For information about the application process, contact us at

Not an EMT?

The Stanford Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training class (SURG 111/211), is a full year course designed to give students the theoretical and practical training they need to take the National Registry certification exam and become certified as EMT-1s (basics).

For more information, visit the class website: Surgery 211

What if your EMT certification has expired?

If your EMT certification has expired within the last 2 years, you are eligible for recertification without retaking the EMT training class, but a refresher course is required, depending on how long it has been since your certification expired. For more information about recertifying in Santa Clara County, see this website:
